Forecasters on Sunday extended a Red Flag Warning that was initially issued on Saturday due to dangerous weather conditions.
The Red Flag Warning was originally set to expire Monday evening, but will now remain in place for all of Solano County until at least Tuesday evening.
In a bulletin issued Sunday morning, forecasters said the decision to extend the warning period came amid a prediction of continued gusty wind, low humidity, hot weather and dry conditions.
Meteorologists urged the public to take wildfire safety measures, including an obedience of localized outdoor burning bans and proper discarding of cigarette butts.
Forecasters say any wildfires that start during the warning period will spread quickly in speed and size.
Already, Solano County has experienced a number of small wildfires that have started during the Red Flag Warning.
On Saturday, a 40-acre wildfire drew a contingency of Solano County wildfires to rural Benicia. The fire was quickly contained, and the cause remains under investigation.
Later in the day, a fire broke out in a vacant lot full of dry grass near Vacaville’s downtown corridor. The fire caused no structural damage or injuries, but it created a giant plume of thick, brown smoke that was visible throughout the city and on nearby Interstate 80.
