A man from Vallejo has become the third victim of a drowning at Lake Berryessa in two weeks.
On Sunday, a Napa County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said 18-year-old Zaire Watu Fairley slipped into the water after standing on a log while visiting the lake with some friends.
An off-duty police officer rescued Fairley from the water, according to a report by the Associated Press, and was able to pull the man to shore.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter brought Fairley to a local hospital, where he later died, the AP reported on Monday.
Fairley was the second person from Solano County and third overall to die from drowning at Lake Berryessa in less than two weeks.
Demetrio Perriatt, 16, of Fairfield died late last month while visiting Lake Berryessa with his girlfriend. He was less than a month away from celebrating his birthday. A few days later, a 35-year-old man from San Pablo drowned at the lake while attempting to save his son.
Overall, 11 people have died from drowning at Lake Berryessa since 2020. Local officials say many of those who died were not wearing life jackets.
