A Bay Area man drowned while trying to save his son at Lake Berryessa over the weekend, becoming the second person to die in less than a week at the lake.
The latest incident occurred Sunday when 35-year-old Marciallo Perez of San Pablo went into the lake to save his son, according to police.
The boy was able to swim safely to shore, but Perez was unable to get out of the water. His body was recovered about an hour after he was reported missing.
A law enforcement spokesperson said Perez was a hero who simply became too tired to make it back to shore. The spokesperson, Henry Wofford, told the news outlet Bay City News that most people who have trouble in the water are from out of town and are sometimes unfamiliar with the lake.
That was not the case last week when a Fairfield teenager drowned while celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday. The body of 16-year-old Demetrio Perriatt, 16, was recovered one day after he disappeared into the lake.
Public safety officials say people who swim at Lake Berryessa should wear a life jacket and familiarize themselves with the terrain before entering the water.
