A Vacaville man who is accused of murdering two women, then sharing images of their deceased bodies on social media, will be temporarily represented by a new public defender, Solano NewsNet has learned.
During a readiness conference on Wednesday, Solano County Public Defender Nick Filloy appeared on behalf of 30-year-old Raymond Weber, who was arrested by police in Vacaville last year after he allegedly raped and murdered two women, then live-streamed their deceased bodies on Instagram.
Filloy served as the second chair on the case, while Weber was represented by Solano County Public Defender Tamani Taylor. On Wednesday, his office assumed management of the case to determine how it will proceed, Filloy said in an e-mail to Solano NewsNet. It remains unclear if he or another public defender will represent Weber over the long-term.
Weber remains in custody without bail, according to court documents reviewed by Solano NewsNet. A readiness hearing was continued to later this month so Filloy could be brought up to speed on the case.
Charging documents say Weber allegedly raped two women at a Vacaville apartment in January 2021. One of the women was his then-girlfriend who lived in Utah; the other was a teenager from the Sacramento area.
After the assault, prosecutors say Weber shot both women “to prevent a lawful arrest.” Their deceased, nude bodies were then live-streamed on Instagram, with copies of the video distributed online for several days before law enforcement officials revealed one of the victims was a minor.
Weber entered a plea of not guilty months several months after his arrest. Last summer, a doctor’s report led a judge to conclude Weber was competent enough to stand trial. Prosecutors are now weighing whether they will seek the death penalty in the case.
Correction: An earlier version of this story said Filloy had been appointed to serve as Weber’s attorney on Wednesday. The information was based on a court document reviewed by Solano NewsNet. After the story was published, Filloy reached out to say he was not appointed to serve was Weber’s attorney, but his office will assume management of the case to determine how it will proceed.
