Fire crews from the Vacaville Fire Department and other agencies will carry out two controlled burns this week.
The first burn will take place behind the California Medical Facility, which is adjacent to the California State Prison in Vacaville. The burn will occur on Wednesday, June 9 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The following day, firefighters will return to Callen Hill to conduct a second prescribed burn in that area. Between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., fire crews will burn the grassy hillside between Callen Street and Allison Drive.
The burns will likely generate smoke that will be visible to residents and businesses in the areas of the event, the fire department said in a social media post on Monday.
“Residents should anticipate drift smoke on June 9 in the areas surrounding Alamo Dr, California Dr, and Peabody Rd. Drift smoke will be seen on June 10 in the Callen, Brown St & Browns Valley areas,” the fire department said.
Controlled burns are carried out in order to provide firefighters with training ahead of wildfire season and to prevent the start and spread of new fires over the summer months.
