A controlled burn in Vacaville sent thick plumes of smoke into the air near the Nut Tree Airport on Wednesday.
The burn was part of a training exercise carried out by the Vacaville Fire Department with personnel from its own agency as well as firefighters from Dixon, CAL FIRE and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The exercise started around 9:30 a.m. along the grassy hill near Callen Street and wrapped up just after noon.
Slightly more than 12 acres of dry vegetation was burned during the event, according to a fire official.
Smoke plumes from the fire were visible throughout Vacaville. Dispatchers received a few calls from concerned citizens, but there was no danger to the public.
Firefighters from the Fairfield Fire Department provided assistance in Vacaville during the exercise.
