Vacaville could keep warming shelter open through February

City council officials in Vacaville will decide next week on plans to keep a recently-opened warming shelter operational through the beginning of next year.
The plan would allow the city to spend funds earmarked for housing toward the warming shelter that opened late last month in partnership with Opportunity House.
The funds could be enough for the shelter to stay open until February. The city’s plan was first reported Tuesday evening by Sacramento TV station KTXL.
“With the pandemic, so many people have been affected,” Kris Concepcion, Vacaville’s fire chief, said in a television interview. “We just want to be able to provide assistance to anyone who needs it.”
The shelter, located at the George Duke Community Center, is open during overnight hours and offers the city’s un-housed residents access to warm dinner, a continental breakfast and access to showers.
Children are not allowed at the shelter, but space is set up for pets.
Organizers say members of the public are welcome to donate food that will be used toward the initiative. Anyone interested in making food or other donations is asked to contact Opportunity House via their website.
