The City of Vacaville will open a warming center for the city’s homeless population on Wednesday.
The center will be operated through a partnership with Opportunity House, a local not-for-profit organization that advocates for the region’s unhoused citizens.
The warming center will be located at the Georgie Duke Center on E. Monte Vista Avenue in Vacaville. It will be open from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily and will offer homeless individuals a warm place to stay as well as nutritious dinner and breakfast.
Organizers say the center is needed because overnight temperatures are reaching seasonably-cold levels, which could create serious health and medical conditions for the region’s homeless population.
The program re-starts a similar initiative that ended in 2018 when re-organization efforts by some participants provoked them to withdraw. No shelter was offered last year because officials assumed the county’s so-called “tiny shed” project slated for Brown Street would come to form. The project was scrapped following an outcry by local residents there.
This year’s program will last through the end of the year. Organizers say members of the public are welcome to donate food that will be used toward the initiative. Anyone interestd in making food or other donations is asked to contact Opportunity House via their website.
