A major crash that triggered a brief closure of Highway 37 in Vallejo this weekend was the result of street racing between at least two cars, the California Highway Patrol confirmed on Sunday.
On Saturday, Vallejo firefighters and medics were dispatched to a report of a car on fire along the Sonoma Boulevard off-ramp from west-bound Highway 37.
The CHP later confirmed the crash was the result of street racing between a Chevrolet Corvette and another car believed to be a Dodge Charger.
During the illegal race, the driver of the Corvette lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a concrete barrier separating the off-ramp from the rest of the freeway.
Both the driver and a passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, but that wasn’t enough to keep them from being injured: Dispatch logs reviewed by Solano NewsNet revealed the driver of the Corvette had both legs amputated as a result of the crash. The passenger of the vehicle sustained minor injuries.
Both were transported to area hospitals for treatment. It was not clear if either individual faced criminal charges in connection with the incident.
The Sonoma Boulevard off-ramp was closed for several hours as police investigated the scene and CalTrans worked to repair a concrete barrier and about 50 feet of steel dividers.
