One person has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Fairfield that left an elderly woman dead last October.
On Tuesday, the Fairfield Police Department said 26-year-old Araceli Marin was arrested after officers received tips that the vehicle involved in the crash was spotted in El Paso, Texas.
Police said they were able to seize the vehicle in Texas, and an examination of the vehicle revealed additional clues into what happened. Investigators obtained search warrants that allowed them to gather more evidence, including data from electronic devices, that pointed to Marin as the culprit behind the crash.
Marin was described by police as a Fairfield resident, and it was not clear why the vehicle was in El Paso.
Authorities believe Marin was behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck 81-year-old Namie Stewart on October 22. The incident took place near the intersection of Cement Hill Road and Laurel Creek Park. Stewart died from her injuries.
The police department put up a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the hit-and-run crash. It was not clear from the agency’s press release on Tuesday if anyone had come forward to collect the reward, but they said the cash offered was enough to encourage a witness to come forward with information that led to Marin’s capture.
“While we know this will not bring Namie back, we hope this development in the investigation brings some peace and closure to Namie’s loved ones,” a police spokesperson said on Tuesday.
