A strike team from the Fairfield Fire Department had little time to rest this weekend when they were released from a wildfire burning in Tulare County to another one that ignited closer to home.
The strike team has been reassigned to help mutual aid crews in Napa County that are currently battling the Glass Fire, a wind-whipped brush fire that broke out around 4:45 a.m. on Saturday.
The Glass Fire started in hilly terrain east of the communities of Calistoga and Larkmead, according to maps published by the state’s firefighting agency CAL FIRE. It ballooned in size to around 1,500 acres by Saturday afternoon, triggering evacuation orders and warnings for homes along roads near the wildfire’s perimeter. There was no containment as of 5 p.m.
The wildfire is burning east toward the community of Angwin, a small town about a half-hour west of the western shore of Lake Berryessa in Napa County, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat newspaper. Local authorities have established an evacuation center at the Crosswalk Community Church, 2590 First Street in Napa for displaced residents.

The wildfire started during a Red Flag Warning that was issued by the National Weather Service over the weekend. Forecasters with the weather agency predicted gusty wind, high temperatures and low humidity levels would contribute to extreme fire dangers. Any fires that started during the Red Flag Warning were likely to spread dangerously fast, forecasters said.
The Red Flag Warning was set to expire Monday morning, but new forecast models prompted the National Weather Service to extend the warning through Monday evening.
