The Solano County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to residents after a purported mountain lion attack was reported over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office said a resident along Solano Road in unincorporated Fairfield discovered some of their animals had been killed during the night.
“Deputies responded with our animal control officers and contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife,” a sheriff’s spokesperson said. “A game warden soon came out and verified that the animals were likely killed by a mountain lion.”
It is the third time in less than a year that a mountain lion has been spotted in north Solano County. Last October, a similar spotting occurred near Peña Adobe Park in Vacaville, preceded by a sighting in rural Fairfield.
Animal control experts say those who live in rural areas should move their pets and livestock to a more secure area during the overnight hours.
“Mountain lions are looking for food, and sometimes our pets and livestock make very easy targets,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officials say individuals who encounter a mountain lion should not run away from the animal. Instead, they urge people to stay alert, remain in place and make loud noises to scare the animal off.
