First responders have recovered the bodies of three men who went missing during a water rescue near Rio Vista over the weekend.
On Wednesday, the Rio Vista Fire Department confirmed it assisted local law enforcement with the recovery of the bodies near Brannan Island State Park this week.
The recovery occurred Tuesday evening after the local fire chief gave authorization for Rio Vista fire personnel to become involved in the recovery mission.
“While not your typical fire department mission, we have a unique watercraft that is able to assist in this capacity and operate close to shore,” the fire department said in a statement. “Knowing that resources in the area are limited, and that finding the missing individuals was important for closure of those impacted, the Fire Chief authorized the additional involvement of Rio Vista Fire personnel.”
The three men went missing after they and others rescued a child from the water south of the city. The child was rescued successfully and did not require medical attention, according to local emergency officials.
The three men did not make it out of the water. An extensive search occurred over the weekend and into the start of this week, one that turned into a recovery mission after the men were presumed dead.
The identities of the victims have not been formally released as of Wednesday afternoon.
