The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a Fire Weather Watch for portions of Northern California, including the counties of Sacramento, Yolo and Solano, through the weekend.
In a bulletin issued earlier this week, the weather agency says forecasts call fro gusty wind and low humidity this weekend — conditions that will likely impact currently-burning wildfires and cause new fires to spread quickly.
“A combination of wind, low humidity and hot conditions could result in critical fire weather conditions which may impact ongoing wildfires,” the weather agency said. “Extreme caution should be taken to prevent new fire starts.”
In the past, the weather agency has encouraged those living, working or taveling within a Fire Weather Watch zone to take certain precautions, including a delay in mowing grass, carefully putting out cigarette butts and avoiding the use of flames outdoors.
At any time, meteorologists with the weather agency can upgrade a Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning, which means conditions are likely to intensify with an increased threat of wildfires within 24 hours. The National Weather Service’s San Francisco office has already upgraded a Fire Weather Watch there to a Red Flag Warning covering portions of Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
