The Vallejo Police Department says it is investigating the circumstances behind a fatal crash involving a car and a pedestrian this week.
The crash happened early Tuesday morning near the intersection of Sonoma Boulevard and Lewis Brown Road.
Officers dispatched to the scene of the crash found a 26-year-old homeless individual from Redwood City laying in the middle of the roadway. His injuries were consistent with someone who was struck by a vehicle. The man, whose identity has not been released, died at the scene.
The driver involved in the crash stayed at the scene of the incident and was cooperating with police, an agency spokesperson said in a press statement on Wednesday. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.
A stretch of Sonoma Boulevard was closed while police processed the scene of the crash on Tuesday.
Users of two Vallejo-focused social media group said drivers tend to speed along that stretch of Sonoma Boulevard, and several individuals said they had close encounters with homeless pedestrians in the area that could have easily turned tragic.
Some citizens called for greater speed enforcement, while others said traffic lights, stop signs and better pedestrian crosswalks could help alleviate the issues there.
