The Vallejo Police Deparment has launched an investigation after a transient woman was found with a fatal gunshot wound on Sunday.
Officers responded to the area of Derr Street near Lemon Street around 9:30 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of an unresponsive woman.
Paramedics were dispatched to the scene to render aid, but the woman ultimately died from her injuries, police say.
The woman was identified only as a 24-year-old from the city. Her name was not released.
“All lives have inherent dignity and value and should never be taken needlessly,” Shawny Williams, the city’s chief of police, said in a statement released on Monday. “Our unhoused population deserves our deepest compassion, service and protection.”
Williams said the case will be “tenaciously pursued.”
