A Vallejo resident was arrested by federal officials earlier this month after he allegedly flew to the Philippines with the intention of having sex with a child.
On Thursday, prosecutors with the U.S. Department of Justice in Sacramento said Balbino Sablad, 79, had been indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to engage in sexual acts with a child under the age of 16.
Prosecutors say Sablad flew to the Philippines to carry out his act, though it was not clear if he was successful in his attempt. He also disclosed his plans to a purported co-conspirator, federal officials alleged.
Sablad was arrested by federal officials on July 1, the Department of Justice said.
The Vallejo man faces a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years as well as a maximum fine of $250,000, though any actual sentence will be determined by a judge if he is convicted on any of the charges. Until then, Sablad is presumed innocent and the allegations against him unproven.
