If you find yourself driving through Vallejo these days, you may want to take a small detour to a gas station.
According to pricing data published by GasBuddy, Vallejo has the cheapest gas in all of Solano County.
But “cheapest” doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap” — the cost of regular unleaded gas is $5.41 cents per gallon at the Costco in Vallejo, which is still significantly higher than what it cost to refuel there just four months ago when prices were around $2.75 a gallon.
Costco gas stations are limited to members who pay at least $60 a year for the privilege of shopping at its warehouses. But Costco is not the only place in Vallejo with cheaper gas prices.
Grand (1401 Springs Road) is selling regular unleaded at $5.45 a gallon. Drivers looking for a more-recognizable brand should stop off at the Shell on Tennessee Street (500 Tennessee Street), where the price of regular unleaded is just $5.46 a gallon.
Outside of Vallejo, the city with the next-cheapest gas is Fairfield, where Sinclair (4444 Central Place) is offering regular unleaded for $5.54 a gallon. That’s the same price Fairfield’s Costco is charging, and no membership is required at Sinclair.
Drivers should avoid buying gas in Rio Vista and Benicia, where motorists are paying some of the highest prices in Solano County. In each city, Chevron gas stations are charging as much as $6.39 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel.
Only one gas station in Rio Vista — KwikServ (1009 Rio Vista Road) — is offering fuel below $6 a gallon, but just barely: As of Wednesday afternoon, the price there was $5.99 a gallon, and it’s likely a matter of days before the price eclipses the $6 a gallon mark.

Some relief could be in sight for California motorists: Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom offered up to $800 in inflation relief as part of his overall budget proposal. But lawmakers still need to approve the plan, and there are questions over how the relief money program will work (Newsom wants the money to be disbursed on debit cards and based on vehicle registration data; some lawmakers think the Franchise Tax Board is better equipped to handle the program).
Policy experts expect a lengthy back-and-forth between Newsom and lawmakers over the relief program, one that could delay payments to October or later — well after the summer travel months, where fuel demand is at its highest.
