The Vallejo Fire Department says it has seen an increase in calls for service related to fires since the start of the month, with fire crews dispatched to 28 fires since June 1.
The calls for service include an early-morning vehicle fire that was reported on Mare Island early Thursday morning. The vehicle, a Nissan sedan, was fully engulfed by the time fire crews arrived on the scene.
It was not clear from the fire department’s statement if anyone was injured in connection with the incident.
The fire department said most fires that ignite are caused by humans, and nearly all of those fires are preventable.
“We are expecting another extreme summer fire season,” the agency warned.
The fire department said residents can help prevent fires from starting by conducting regularly scheduled maintenance on their vehicles, removing dead or overgrown vegetation from their property and by properly discarding cigarettes and other like objects.
The City of Vallejo maintains a fire prevention webpage where residents and businesses can learn more information on how to prevent the start of fires, with links to the city’s fire inspection services and public education materials. To access the webpage, click or tap here.
