After a little more than two years on the job in Vallejo, the city’s fire chief announced his sudden and unexpected departure for other career opportunities on Monday.
The announcement came in a press release distributed to reporters by Vallejo’s public information officer.
In a statement, Daryl Arbuthnott said he enjoyed his time with the Vallejo Fire Department was “confident that the city will recruit a new fire chief who will continue to grow the Vallejo Fire Department and support the community.”
Arbuthnott joined the Vallejo Fire Department as its chief in January 2019 after serving in a similar role in Yolo County. He has spent four decades working in various firefighting capacities, including a 37-year career with the Los Angeles Fire Department, according to a biography posted on the City of Vallejo website.
On Monday, city officials said Arbuthnott stepped down after receiving other promising opportunities available to him that he cannot pass over.” It was not clear what those opportunities were, including whether it marked an end to his firefighting career.
“I wish Chief Arbuthnott the best in his future endeavors, and I owe him many thanks for the professionalism and knowledge he brought to Vallejo,” Greg Nyhoff, Vallejo’s city manager, said in a statement.
Kyle Long, Vallejo’s deputy fire chief, will serve as the agency’s chief in an interim role while the city searches for Arbuthnott’s permanent successor.
