A Vallejo Police Department checkpoint established last Friday to screen drivers for possible impairment resulted in arrests for offenses unrelated to DUI, the agency affirmed on Tuesday.
In a press release, a Vallejo Police spokesperson said four people were arrested during a DUI checkpoint operated on December 18. Of the four people arrested, one had an outstanding warrant and three were detained on firearms-related charges.
Another 22 drivers were cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license. Ten vehicles were also impounded at the checkpoint, Vallejo officials said.
“Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests,” the agency said in a statement. “The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.”
None of the arrests, citations or vehicle impounds reported by Vallejo police had anything to do with DUI, which was the intended purpose of the checkpoint. The checkpoint was operated with grant money that was specifically earmarked for DUI prevention and traffic safety programs and initiatives.
