A pair of Solano County newspaper photographers received several prestigious California Journalism Awards for images that were published last year.
Joel Rosenbaum of the Vacaville Reporter received two second-place awards for his sports photography that appeared in print and online, including a stunning image of a softball game that received high praise from a contest judge.
“Was the runner safe or out at home? This perfectly timed, crisp image leaves no doubt as to the outcome,” the judge wrote.
His other award-winning photo depicted the Vanden High School football team celebrating after their victory against Windsor High School in a championship game last year.
Chris Riley, a photographer for the Vallejo Times-Herald newspaper, also took a top honor for his artistic photo called “Spotty Weather,” with a judge writing that the “sheer beauty of this picture drew me.” The photograph won fourth place in the contest.
Both newsrooms entered the contest in a division intended for newspapers with a circulation of less than 15,000. Circulation numbers count both paid subscribers and individual retail sales.
The Vacaville Reporter and the Vallejo Times-Herald are operated by Colorado-based Digital First Media, which is owned by hedge fund Alden Global Capital.
