The City of Vacaville has hired a former Fairfield police chief officer to served as the city’s next interim chief of police.
Starting Monday, Joseph Allio will assume command of the Vacaville Police Department on an interim basis while the city continues an internal audit of the agency’s training, policies and procedures.
The announcement was made in a statement released by city officials on Thursday. It came one day after Vacaville’s former police chief John Carli officially retired after taking a leave of absence to spend accrued vacation time.
“I selected Chief Allio because of his experience in police audits and his reputation as an effective leader and great communicator,” Aaron Busch, Vacaville’s city manager, said in a statement. “I am optimistic that Chief Allio and this audit will help the Vacaville Police Department identify areas for improvement and reform, and ensure that our community is receiving the superior service it deserves.”
Ian Schmutzler, the agency’s captain who served as interim chief following Carli’s leave of absence, will return to his regular duties next week.
In a statement of his own, Allio said he looked forward to serving in his hometown. He joined the force in 1984 with an opportunity in San Francisco before moving to Fairfield in 1987, where he worked until 2017.
