A Fairfield man who was fatally shot in neighboring Vacaville on Monday had several prior run-ins with local law enforcement, Solano NewsNet has learned.
Jayro Magana, 26, was identified by police as the victim in Monday’s shooting, which was first reported around 2 p.m. along the 1100 block of Cinnabar Way. Police located Magana suffering from several gunshot wounds; he was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
David Herschel, 20, of Vallejo was arrested in connection with the shooting, police said. Herschel was booked into the Solano County Jail on multiple charges, including homicide.
It wasn’t clear if Herschel and Magana knew each other, or what prompted the shooting. Magana has a lengthy criminal history that dates back to at least 2016, when he was arrested after a traffic stop in Fairfield.
During the stop, police discovered a handgun that had been reported stolen out of Arizona. After pleading guilty to the charges, Magana was arrested again after he assaulted a jail guard while awaiting sentencing in the gun case.
The assault came after guards confronted Magana about hoarding various items in his cell, according to prosecutors, who imposed new felony charges against the man. Those charges invalidated a plea deal reached in the earlier gun case, and Magana was ultimately sentenced in connection with felony assault against a peace officer.
