Officers with the Vacaville Police Department arrested one person during a night-time protest near City Hall on Wednesday.
The arrest was made after police issued several dispersal orders during the tense but otherwise non-violent demonstration.
The protest started around 4 p.m. in the area of the Vacaville Police Department’s headquarters near City Hall. For two hours, around three dozen demonstrators moved up and down Merchant Street, occasionally breaking off into smaller groups and moving down side streets toward homes.
Around 6:15 p.m., a large group confronted surveillance officers in the parking lot of a restaurant along Merchant Street. Additional officers were dispatched to secure the area.
An unlawful assembly and dispersal order was given around 6:25 p.m., with officers pushing demonstrators down Merchant Street and Elm Street. A group of around 25 demonstrators ended up near a home along the 500 block of Williams Street where dispersal orders were issued once again.
As protesters assembled near their cars in front of a restaurant, police gave several dispersal commands before arresting one person who “refused lawful orders,” according to dispatches reviewed by Solano NewsNet.
The protest had mostly dissolved by 7:30 p.m.
The demonstration came several days after vandals targeted the police department’s headquarters and City Hall during a weekly anti-police protest. The damage caused during Sunday’s protest cost the city between $20,000 and $30,000 to fix, according to Vacaville’s police chief.
No arrests have been made in connection with the Sunday incident.
