A Vacaville man who lied to police about the circumstances of an injury will spend several years in federal prison.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento said 30-year-old Guy J. Bass was sentenced to 8 years and 10 months in prison after he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Prosecutors said Bass’ troubles began in August 2020 when he was driven to a local hospital by an acquaintance for treatment of an injury caused by a gunshot.
Bass initially told police that he was shot by an unknown assailant before eventually confessing to shooting himself by accident, prosecutors said. Police later discovered a stolen semi-automatic pistol in his friend’s car.
One month later, police arrested Bass on an outstanding warrant. During the arrest, Bass reportedly confessed to having a firearm, which police later determined to be a privately-made, non-serialized weapon known as a “ghost gun,”
His troubles with police reportedly didn’t end there: In November 2020, police spotted Bass and a friend parked somewhere in Vacaville. A police dog alerted officers to the possible presence of drugs, and Bass eventually handed over a bag of methamphetamine, prosecutors said.
Police searched the vehicle and discovered another “ghost gun,” leading to Bass’ arrest. He pleaded guilty to federal charges last August, according to court records.
Though Bass was sentenced to over 8 years, he will likely serve less time based on good conduct while incarcerated, though he will likely be ineligible for additional time off through the completion of anti-recidivism activity because his criminal charges involved a firearm.
