Vacaville police say man in video not a prowler

A man who is visible in a video widely circulated to news media outlets over the weekend is not a prowler, the Vacaville Police Department says.
The man, whose identity has not been release, was “of diminished capacity,” a police spokesperson told KTXL (Channel 40) on Monday.
The statement comes after several media outlets acknowledged a police request to circulate a video that was posted on social media, one that purported to show an adult male leering through the window of a home on Lovers Lane.
The police department eventually updated its social media post to assure the public that the man, now identified, was not a threat to the public. When asked why the department waited until a competing news outlet broke the story first, a police spokesperson said the timing was coincidental.
“Earlier today, the competing news outlet requested additional information regarding the investigation,” the spokesperson said. “It was at that time I learned of the updated information.”
The spokesperson said the lack of update to other media outlets and the greater public through social media was unintentional.
