A suspect who was shot during a police encounter along Interstate 80 near Dixon has died.
The shooting happened about a half-hour after the California Highway Patrol received a report of a solo vehicle crash along the west-bound lanes of Interstate 80 near Oday Road.
Around 11 p.m., a CHP officer on scene said one person was being held at gunpoint. Minutes later, the officer dispatched a report of shots fired.
Police started CPR while waiting for a medical crew to arrive on the scene. A fire crew arrived a short time later and pronounced the suspect deceased. No officers were injured in the incident.
Exactly what happened leading up to the police encounter isn’t clear, nor is it known if the shooting was related to the earlier crash that was reported in the area.
Several west-bound lanes of Interstate 80 are closed near Oday Road and Midway Road. There is no estimated time of re-opening. Oday Road itself is also closed for an undetermined amount of time.
Officers from the Vacaville and Dixon police departments as well as deputies from the Solano County Sheriff’s Department are in the area enforcing road closures while CHP officials work to process the crime scene.
