The Travis Unified School District’s board on Wednesday approved a Declaration of Need that will allow schools within the district to hire educators who are in the process of being credentialed to teach.
The move comes after the school district board determined there were not enough local, fully-certified educators to fill the district’s employment needs.
According to a document filed with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and reviewed by Solano NewsNet, Travis Unified schools need a total of 25 educators, including five who are able to teach multiple subjects, 10 who are assigned to teach a single subject and 10 who are capable of providing special education instruction.
Of the 10 single-subject limited assignment educators, the Travis Unified School District board said four science, three math and two English teachers are needed, as well as one physical education instructor.
The document says school officials have attempted to recruit certified educators through the placement of job announcements in newspapers and by utilizing college and university employment centers in order to find qualified, certified instructors. Additionally, district officials say they partner with U.C. Davis, California State University East Bay and two other schools to recruit interns.
Travis school district officials are hoping to secure 25 limited assignment permits that will allow interns and others who are seeking full certification to work as educators. The school district may employ non-certified educators only after it has exhausted attempts to recruit individuals who hold teaching certificates, the document says.
The district will be able to recruit non-certified teachers through June 2023, the document says.
The Travis Unified School District consists of seven schools located in Fairfield and Vacaville, as well as one education center and one community day school.
