A crash involving an overturned tomato truck is causing congestion on both sides of Interstate 80 through Vacaville.
The crash happened Monday around 5:10 a.m. when an open-roof tomato truck crashed into the center median along westbound Interstate 80, sending thousands of tomatoes crashing onto the neighboring eastbound lanes of the road.
Five other vehicles were also involved in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The far-left lane of westbound Interstate 80 and multiple lanes of the eastbound portion of the freeway were blocked for several hours while crews cleared the crash and cleaned up the spill.
As of 10 a.m., two lanes of eastbound Interstate 80 were still closed.
On the eastbound side of the freeway, traffic is backed up to Waterman Boulevard in Fairfield. On the westbound side, traffic remains slow from the scene of the crash to Vaca Valley Parkway.
