Two roads in Benicia will be closed Tuesday morning during a COVID-19 vaccination event, the police department said in a release.
The vaccine event was announced on Friday and, due to high demand, city officials said all 1,400 available slots were filled up by the following day.
“The City of Benicia is excited to offer this vaccination clinic on very short notice to seniors over age 75,” Steve Young, the mayor of Benicia, said in a press release. “Many thanks are due to our great city staff who worked over the weekend, in coordination with Solano Public Health and Carquinez Village, to set this up. This is a very ambitious effort, and we ask the public for a certain level of patience as we attempt to vaccinate 1,400 people in a single day.”
The event will take place at the Benicia Senior Center at 1201 East 2nd Street. Those with appointments need to know the following information:
Seniors with appointments are urged to show up no more than 15 minutes in advance. All appointments will be honored, even if lines cause delays.
There will be limited parking at the event. Those who are mobile are encouraged to park a few blocks away and walk to the event.
A dedicated drop-off and pick-up point in front of the City Gym will be established for seniors with limited mobility.
All seniors with appointments need to first register at the City Gym, which is next door to the senior center.
All seniors with appointments will be required to show proof of age and proof of Solano County residency.
One caretaker is allowed to accompany a senior at the event, but the caretaker will not receive the vaccine.
During the event, the intersection of East 2nd Street at Military East will be closed to traffic. Seniors will receive the second dose of the Moderna vaccine at a similar event scheduled for March 2.
Those with questions about the event are asked to call the City of Benicia at 707-746-4710 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
