Officials with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) have issued a SIG Alert for the Rio Vista Bridge after it suffered an apparent mechanical failure Tuesday evening.
Around 7 p.m., the CHP said the Rio Vista Bridge will be closed for the foreseeable future until a repair crew can fix it.
The bridge became stuck in the "up" position during the evening commute, leaving motorists on Highway 12 without a direct way to cross the river.
Traffic on the Sacramento side of the bridge is backed up on Highway 12 to Jackson Slough Road, while traffic is congested on several main roads in Rio Vista due to the bridge malfunction.
There is no estimated time of re-opening for the bridge.
