Emergency responders have cleared the scene of a massive, multi-car crash involving six passenger vehicles and a Federal Express truck that briefly blocked lanes of Interstate 80 near Fairfield on Tuesday.
The crash was reported around 5:45 p.m. along the east-bound lanes of Interstate 80 in Fairfield.
Preliminary reports indicated the driver of a Federal Express truck struck several vehicles between Suisun Valley Parkway and Air Base Parkway before crashing down an embankment that separates the freeway from city streets.
When fire medics arrived to the scene, they found at least six vehicles had minor to moderate damage, with the Federal Express truck taking the brunt of the crash.
One person was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with unknown injuries. The cause of the crash remains unknown, but preliminary information indicates the driver of the Federal Express truck may have suffered from a medical emergency while in transit.
It was not clear if the Federal Express truck was delivering parcels at the time of the crash.
As emergency crews worked to process the scene, a SIG Alert was issued for traffic along east-bound Interstate 80 through Fairfield. The California Highway Patrol had two lanes of the freeway open as of 6:15 p.m., and crews were working to re-open the remaining lanes. All lanes of the freeway were reported to be open as of 6:45 p.m., and officials eventually canceled the SIG Alert.
