Officials at a Sacramento television station are probing a series of tweets published Monday afternoon that claimed a wildfire was burning near the city of Vacaville when it was not.
In a tweet promoting a news conference, ABC affiliate KXTV (Channel 10) said CAL FIRE and public safety officials from Santa Rosa and Sonoma County were discussing "the Glass Fire near Vacaville."
A handful of Twitter users replied to the tweet, pointing out that the Glass Fire was burning nowhere near Vacaville or Solano County. Several users asked the station to amend or delete its tweet because it had the potential to spread misinformation and trigger fear in local residents.
A web producer eventually tried to justify the initial post by saying the fire was “near” Vacaville because it takes motorists around 47 minutes to drive to Napa County from there.
Responding to an email sent by Solano News Update, KXTV’s news director Jill Manuel promised to review the tweets published on Monday.
Over the weekend, public safety agencies in Solano County posted several bulletins saying the wildfires in Napa and Sonoma counties were creating hazy conditions in Vacaville and nearby communities. But the fires are not expected to cross into Solano County and are not threatening the community of Vacaville, fire forecasters say.
Residents throughout Solano County remain on edge after a wildfire crossed over a ridge separating Napa County from Solano and Yolo counties last month. The LNU Lightning Complex fire destroyed more than 200 structures in Solano County and claimed the lives of three individuals there.
