The City of Vallejo will receive more than $12 million from a state homelessness initiative in order to fund the construction of a 48-unit housing project.
The announcement was made in a press release issued by Governor Gavin Newsom’s office on Tuesday.
The housing project in Vallejo is expected to be located on Broadway Street. When finished, it will consist of four dozen units, a community room, courtyard and a 1,600-square foot deck, according to the governor’s office.
“On-site supportive services will be client-centered, strengths-based and trauma-informed to help participants with goal setting, life skills, financial literary, budgeting, needs assessments and linkages to benefits and community resources,” a spokesperson for Newsom said on Tuesday.
In January, officials in Vallejo said they would ask their state counterparts for up to $20 million toward the housing project. Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell and City Council Member Cristina Arriola voted against the application.
The funds announced on Tuesday are part of the state’s Project Homekey initiative, which has spent nearly $4 billion on homelessness reduction programs since it was introduced in 2020. Already this year, state officials have earmarked more than $1 billion toward housing projects.
Very little of the state’s homelessness reduction funds have been allocated to projects in Solano County. Local officials must apply for the money, complete a "pre-application consultation" with the state's housing agency and affirm their proposal's eligibility for the funds based on a specific set of criteria.
In late 2020, city officials in Vacaville briefly debated an application for Project Homekey funds before ultimately deciding against it.
