The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) has extended a key tax deadline for residents and businesses impacted by severe weather earlier this year, including those who live, do business and work in Solano County.
The new state tax deadline is October 16, 2023, which coincides with an extended deadline for federal taxes announced by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS deadline extension covering Solano County residents and businesses was originally announced in January, with affected residents and businesses having until October 16, 2023 to file their tax returns.
“As communities across the state continue recovering from the damage caused by the winter storms, California is working swiftly to help recovering Californians get back on their feet,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement on Thursday. “The state is aligning with the Biden Administration and extending the tax filing deadline in addition to the tax relief announced earlier this year.”
Last month, Newsom announced Solano County residents and businesses would be allowed to claim a deduction for disaster-related losses after President Joseph Biden signed a federal disaster declaration associated with severe winter storms that crossed through Northern California in early January.
Taxpayers are allowed to claim a federal loss when filing an initial or amended federal tax return for 2022. The same applies to California tax returns: State filers must write the name of the disaster in blue or black ink at the top of their tax return if filing by mail, or follow instructions on tax preparation software for entering disaster-related information.

In addition to Solano County, residents and businesses in a number of other Northern California communities qualify for the extended deadline and disaster-related tax deductions, including Alameda, Butte, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Placer, Sacramento, Stanislaus and Yolo counties.
