A veteran police officer was wished well by his colleagues on Wednesday as he retired from the Vacaville Police Department with nearly three decades of law enforcement experience.
Sgt. Jason Johnson announced his retirement to the department earlier this year and set April 20 as his departure date — exactly 28 years from the day he graduated from the California Highway Patrol academy, according to a colleague who dispatched a special message across the police radio system on Wednesday.
Johnson worked for various California Highway Patrol offices in the San Francisco Bay Area before joining the Vacaville Police Department in 2005. He was one of two S.W.A.T. team leaders with the agency, according to an online profile reviewed by Solano NewsNet, and his police service included working on narcotic, electronic crime and gang cases.
He spent the last three years working with the agency’s Youth Services department, and he maintained an office at Will C. Wood High School. In a profile published by the Vacaville Reporter earlier this year, Johnson said working on the Youth Services team was his favorite assignment.
In the radio message broadcast on Wednesday, a colleague praised Johnson’s volunteerism, including his commitment to the Special Olympics.
“"J.J., you have always been a kind and inclusive partner,” his colleague said. “You are so proud of this profession, and bring pride to this badge that you have worn for almost three decades."
"The honor has been mine, thank you all," Johnson responded.
