All Solano County libraries will be open to offer reprieve from a torrential heat wave that will drive outside temperatures into the triple-digits across the region.
The libraries will serve as cooling centers from now until Thursday, coinciding with an Excessive Heat Warning throughout Solano County and much of the Sacramento Valley.
During the heat watch, local temperatures could exceed 108 degrees, according to a statement from the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office. There will be limited overnight relief, with temperatures lingering in the 60s and 70s throughout the evening and early morning hours each day.
Heat-related illnesses are likely during the warning period. Fire crews from Vacaville, Fairfield, Suisun City and other areas experienced a higher number of injury calls on Tuesday compared to last week, according to dispatches reviewed by Solano NewsNet.
Cooling centers can offer children, the elderly and other sensitive groups a relief from the extreme temperatures. Solano Libraries serve as cooling centers during periods of intense heat. The Benicia City Library, which is not part of the Solano Library system, also operates as a cooling center.
The cooling centers are located at:
Benicia Library (150 East L Street)
Dixon Library (230 North First Street)
Fairfield Civic Center Library (1150 Kentucky Street)
Cordelia Library (5050 Business Center Drive, Fairfield)
John F. Kennedy Library (505 Santa Clara Street, Vallejo)
Rio Vista Library (44 South Second Street)
Solano Law Library (600 Union Avenue, Fairfield)
Springstown Library (1003 Oakwood Avenue, Vallejo)
Suisun City Library (601 Pintail Drive)
Vacaville Cultural Center Library (1020 Ulatis Drive)
Vacaville Town Square Library (1 Town Square Place)
All listed libraries function as cooling centers during their normal hours of operation. Hours vary, but libraries are typically open during the week between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with some libraries offering extended hours during certain weekdays.
