Firefighters from across Solano County were brought to Vallejo on Friday to rescue several individuals who were trapped in a tunnel.
The incident started around 11 a.m. when a utility crew performing pre-construction tasks discovered a man-made trench on a property along Sacramento Street.
One person was rescued from the tunnel before emergency officials arrived on the scene, according to a source, while another remained trapped in the trench.
The complex rescue triggered the county’s urban search and rescue team strategy, which brought firefighters from Benicia, Dixon, Fairfield and Vacaville to the scene.
Another person was rescued from the trench, and firefighters entered the tunnel to ensure no one else was inside.
Authorities did not say if the men needed medical attention, and it was not clear why the tunnel was there, who dug it or how the individuals got inside.
