Solano County will receive $1.9 million in wildfire prevention and preparedness assistance as part of the newly-enacted state budget.
The allocation, first reported by Solano NewsNet earlier this week, was confirmed by the office of State Senator Bill Dodd, who said the lawmaker was instrumental in securing the funding in the state’s budget.
“We’ve seen what fire can do in Solano County, so it’s essential that we get the resources we need to keep our communities safe,” Dodd, who represents all of Solano County in the state’s 3rd Senate District, said in a statement.
The money will help Solano County reduce potential fire fuel like dry vegetation and brush, invest in and upgrade alert warning systems and engage the public in wildfire preparedness and preparation initiatives.
“Given the early start to the wildfire season, I’m glad California is able to make this important, local investment,” Dodd said.
Until recently, destructive wildfires were a rare occurrence in Solano County. Things began to change around 2010 when the region started to encounter at least one large wildfire every summer.
The worst fire in the region was experienced last August when a portion of the LNU Lightning Complex wildfire crossed from Napa County into rural Solano County. The wildfire scorched tens of thousands of acres of land and destroyed hundreds of homes and other structures.
