The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Solano County reached a grim milestone on Monday, with county health officials reporting 100 people had died from the virus since the county began collecting data in February 2020.
The record comes just one week after the county’s top health official said he expected a surge in infections and an increase in deaths as people gathered on two holiday weekends despite repeated requests from health experts to follow the state’s stay-at-home order.
More than 160 people are in Solano County-area hospitals with coronavirus-related ailments, according to county health data. The area’s available hospital intensive care unit bed space has teetered between 11 and 20 percent over the last few days and was at 17 percent as of Monday.
In all, more than 20,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Solano County, including 1,639 active cases. The actual number of COVID-19 infections in the area is likely higher because not everyone gets tested for the virus, including those with asymptomatic conditions who are more likely to unknowingly spread it to others.
