A power surge that triggered a widespread outage in Vacaville on Tuesday briefly interrupted a city council meeting there.
The power outage happened around 6:50 p.m due to an overloaded grid, according to a source with knowledge of the incident.
A Solano NewsNet camera that was inside the city council’s chambers captured the power surge as it happened. The surge impacted the city’s ability to broadcast the council meeting, which prompted City Manager Aaron Busch to request a short recess.
The City Hall is equipped with backup generators, and the city’s ability to broadcast the meeting was restored within 10 minutes.
The surge appeared to originate with a utility box located along Nut Tree Parkway near Helen Power Drive. A Solano NewsNet photographer who was driving through the area witnessed a Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) utility crew working on the utility box there.
Around 300 residents and businesses along Interstate 80 in Vacaville were still without electrical service as of 7:50 p.m., according to information published online by PG&E. Those customers should have their electrical service restored by 9 p.m., PG&E said.
