A suspected thief was captured in Fairfield after a brief high-speed pursuit that led to a manhunt in a residential neighborhood.
Early Tuesday evening, officers were dispatched to a report of a strong-arm robbery in which several personal items, including a cell phone, were taken from a victim. The victim described the suspect as a light-skinned Black man with dreadlocks who fled from the crime in a dark-colored sedan with black rims and tinted windows.
Just after 11 p.m., a Fairfield patrol officer spotted a car driving down North Texas Street at a high rate of speed. The car and the driver matched the description of the person and vehicle involved in the theft.
The officer continued following the car down Marigold Drive and was in the process of attempting a traffic stop when he lost sight of the vehicle. A perimeter was set up, and the vehicle was found unoccupied along Gardenia Court a short time later.
Officers said they recovered several personal items belonging to the victim as well as a Smith & Wesson revolver located inside the car.
Just before midnight, a resident along Daffodil Drive called police to report a suspicious person laying in their front yard. The description of the person matched that of the pursuit and theft suspect. A few minutes after the call, the suspect was seen running away from Daffodil Drive toward Marigold Drive where police were still conducting their search.
The suspect was taken into custody in front of a home a short time later. Officers conducted a video conference call with the victim of the theft who positively identified the detained suspect as the culprit.
The suspect was later taken to an area hospital for medical treatment. His identity was not available as of early Wednesday morning.
