Police in Fairfield have released new details on a fatal shooting that occurred in Cordelia.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Fairfield Police Department said the shooting occurred during a dangerous home invasion early Tuesday morning.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. at a residence along the 600 block of Vintage Valley Drive.
A married couple inside was enjoying their morning routine when a person unknown to them knocked on their front door. After checking their doorbell security camera, the couple chose not to respond.
Frustrated, the person at the door kicked in the door so hard that it came off its hinges, a Fairfield city official said in a social media post. The frightened couple armed themselves with a legally-purchased handgun and opened fire at the suspect, striking him at least once.
The suspect fled the home, then collapsed on a nearby sidewalk. Police were dispatched to the scene, where they performed CPR in an attempt to revive the person. The suspect died at the scene, police said.
The alleged home intruder was identified by police only as a 27-year-old man from Suisun City. Police say the suspect was on parole for an unspecified violent crime out of Alameda County.
Police say a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine was located next to the body of the suspect.
Law enforcement officials said they would not provide additional information about the incident because their investigation is still ongoing.
