A loud explosion late Saturday evening was the result of a police pursuit that came to an end with a bang.
What started the pursuit through Vacaville was not clear, but the chase ended around Depot Street when the driver crashed into a fire hydrant and power transformer, causing a giant flash of light and a loud explosion that could be heard for miles throughout the city.
The driver was taken into custody without incident. A crew from Pacific Gas & Electric de-energized power lines in the area and were working to fix the affected transformer as of 1 a.m. Sunday.
The issue was not believed to be linked to a separate blackout that caused 9,000 PG&E customers to lose electricity in rural Fairfield, Cordelia and Suisun City around the same time. The cause of that power outage remains unknown.
