Police in Winters have issued a warning after a bear was spotted in an unincorporated part of Solano County near the Yolo County town.
On Friday, the police department said a resident near Putah Creek Road spotted a bear. It was not clear when the sighting was reported to police, nor was it known if the bear was one of the same animals spotted in Vacaville earlier in the week.
Police said the bears are likely moving into town in search of food and territory.
“Recent burn scars may also be driving bears into new areas,” a Winters Police Department spokesperson wrote. “Homeowners are encouraged to make sure their trash is secure, make sure any pets [and] livestock are secure, and pick up pet food left outside.”
The message comes less than a week after residents in several parts of rural and incorporated Vacaville reported bear sightings there.
Police in Vacaville said they were taking a hands-off approach to the bears, with the hope that the animals would wander back into nature on their own.
