A Benicia Police Department patrol officer fatally struck a homeless pedestrian early Wednesday morning, the agency said in a press release sent to reporters.
The incident happened around 2 a.m. in the 1900 block of East Second Street when an unidentified officer struck a pedestrian with his patrol car, a Benicia police spokesperson said.
The officer immediately called for paramedics, the spokesperson said. Life-saving efforts were performed, but the pedestrian died at the scene. The victim was later identified as Scott Hamers, 48, of Solano County.
“This is a tragic incident for all involved,” Mike Greene, Benicia’s interim chief of police, said in a statement.
The officer was removed from the scene of the crash, and the investigation into what happened will be conducted by the California Highway Patrol, the agency said.
