A mechanical issue at the Valero refinery in Benicia has caused flaring at the facility, the local fire department said in a public notice on Thursday.
The problem was discovered Thursday morning around 10 a.m., causing the refinery to start flaring as a safety precaution.
Around noon, the fire department said Valero had notified them that higher levels of carbon dioxide had been released above reportable levels, but that no off-site health impacts were expected.
The exact nature of the mechanical issue that resulted in flaring was not clear. The fire department says it will issue additional public notices as the situation develops.
