The Fairfield Police Activities League’s Teen Center will revitalize its location on North Texas Street thanks to a $300,000 grant awarded by Lowe’s through its Hometowns initiative this month.
The money will go towards the construction of a new basketball court at the PAL Teen Center as well as additional bathroom facilities, a spokesperson for the facility said in an e-mail to Solano NewsNet on Thursday. Teens were offered the opportunity to pick the colors for the basketball court via an Instagram story published by the community center on Tuesday.
The grant is part of an overall initiative spearheaded by Lowe’s to provide funding for community revitalization projects across 40 states and the District of Columbia. The Fairfield PAL Teen Center was one of 31 community centers to be awarded money through the initiative.
“We're excited to continue improving hometowns across the country by building on our longstanding commitment to serving the communities where we live and work,” Marvin Ellison, the chairman and chief executive officer of Lowe’s, said in a statement. “With support from our associates, neighbors and partners, Lowe's Hometowns will address urgent needs in communities, from revitalizing vibrant green spaces to supporting first responders and local heroes, as we strive to make hometowns better for all, including those in real need.”
The PAL Teen Center serves young residents in Fairfield, Suisun City and Travis Air Force Base, and offers them a safe space to engage in healthy activities like sports and recreation in a supervised environment.
The community center was located on Union Avenue, but announced plans earlier this year to relocate to the 2200 block of North Texas Street.
