A knife-wielding man was taken into custody after confronting several Benicia residents and police officers on Tuesday.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Military East and 2nd Street. Officers received reports that a man armed with a knife was making gestures at passing cars along the road there and, at one point, tried to enter a motorist’s car.
A few minutes later, the suspect made his way to the Benicia Police Department where he sat in the lobby of the police station while still armed with the knife. He left the lobby as the first officer was arriving on the scene, police said.
A confrontation ensued, and the man was ordered to drop the knife. A Taser was deployed, but it was not successful. A bean bag to the arm did the trick, and officers took the man into custody without further incident.
“We are proud of our officers for the way they handled this incident, which could have had a different result if not for our officers’ great restraint and training,” a Benicia Police Department spokesperson said in a news release.
The name of the suspect was not available as of Wednesday evening.
